StreamChum vs Meld Studio

StreamChum is Live Center, Studio, Play, overlays you describe, and the rest of the desk. Meld is a free ground-up encoder with combined chat in the app. How they stack up, and when both make sense.

Takeaway

StreamChum is the desk and the show: Live Center for chat and mods, Elements you can describe, Studio so go-live sits in the same login, Play so viewers jump into the game from a browser. Meld Studio is a free ground-up encoder with combined chat next to the preview and Spark for overlays. Start here if you want one place to run the night. Look at Meld if you mainly wanted a newer encoder. A lot of people keep Meld for the picture and Live Center for chat.

Start with StreamChum

Live Center is one feed. Delete, timeout, and ban stay on the platform the message came from. Invite mods so they sign in themselves. Community profiles accumulate from ordinary chat. Viewer briefs are included on the trial and on paid plans. They do not spend creative AI credits.

Studio is the go-live app: capture, scene, overlays, one click. You can describe the layout. Overlays are Elements: a free pack, or a matching set you describe. Actions compose chat, overlay, scene, and delay steps. Ko-fi events and Discord outbound sit on the desk. The OBS plugin remains if you are not ready to leave OBS.

What else is on the desk

The encoder comparison is one slice. The rest of StreamChum is why people stay after Go live.

  • Play: host on Windows, share a link, seat P1 through P4. Viewers play in the browser with a virtual pad. No client install, no desktop access.
  • Community memory: profiles that build from ordinary chat, plus viewer briefs on whoever is typing.
  • Automod, timers, chat commands, counters, and raid tools on the same desk as the feed.
  • Actions and a Stream Deck plugin with a scoped token: chat, overlay, scene, and delay as one recipe.
  • Analytics: peaks, platform mix, VODs, and chat replay after the stream.
  • Discord go-live posts and shout-outs (outbound only), plus Ko-fi donation events.
  • Xbox or PlayStation Broadcast: run Live Center on a phone while the console encodes. Xbox / PlayStation.
  • Scene Builder and Studio AI: describe a layout, it places sources. Element studio and free packs for the look.

Fair warning: this is a StreamChum blog. Meld is a real product. It is free, and it is a serious encoder. If that is the job you came to solve, use it. We will not pretend Studio is Meld with a different icon.

How Meld stacks up

Meld is not a fork of OBS. Grab it from meldstudio.co. No watermark, no time cap on the encoder. That is the whole pitch for a lot of people: a newer desktop that still costs $0 to go live.

  • A free encoder with built-in multistream. Toggle destinations independently. Meld Multi uploads once and their cloud fans it out.
  • Multi Chat: chats in one dock next to the preview. You can read and reply without three browser tabs.
  • Stream Manager: titles, categories, tags without opening each dashboard.
  • A deep mixer and recorder: third-party plugins, a VOD track, multi-track recording, instant replay, virtual camera.
  • Built-in widgets: chat overlay, alerts, goals. Spark if you want to describe a custom one. Spark Plug if you want that builder inside OBS.

They also talk to the usual extras: Stream Deck, VTube Studio / Spout2, Streamer.bot, Mix It Up, Lumia. That is an encoder with a plugin-shaped ecosystem, not a hosted mod desk.

Where Meld is a weaker fit

Multi Chat is a combined view in the encoder. That is useful while you are staring at the preview. It is not a live mod desk. You do not invite a person on their own login. You do not get a timeout that only hits Kick when the message was Kick. You do not get community profiles that build from chat, or a two-line brief on the regular who just typed.

  • A slur in the combined pane is still a slur you have to punish in that platform's own tools. Seeing it is not moderating it.
  • No StreamChum-style Actions that mix chat, overlay, and delay as one workspace recipe, fired from the desk or a scoped Stream Deck token we issue.
  • Spark is the paid layer if you outgrow the free gallery: Meld Pro $20/month, Meld Max $60/month on their pricing page (yearly billed 15% cheaper). The encoder stays free. The overlay AI does not.
  • You are still in an encoder window. Mods who should not have your PC are not in that window.

Overlays: Elements versus Spark

StreamChum Element Builder writes overlays you host as browser sources in Studio or OBS. Meld Spark writes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript onto the Meld canvas (or into OBS via Spark Plug). Ours are on Pricing: Plus and Pro share the desk; they differ by creative AI credits, seats, and retention. Spark's paid plans are on Meld's pricing page.

If you already live in Live Center, Elements stay in the product that also timeouts. StreamChum packs are a matching set tonight. Meld's free gallery plus built-in alerts is enough for a lot of encoder-only nights. Meld Pro is for people who will keep prompting Spark.

Going live

Studio is go-live in the same login as the desk. Setup is in the Studio guide. Stay in OBS with the plugin if the scene collection is the thing you refuse to rebuild. You still get Live Center either way.

Meld wants to be the output panel: add destinations, toggle them, Stream Manager for titles. Multi is their cloud option so your uplink is one pipe. Fine if the encoder is the product you opened.

Chat, mods, and who is allowed at the PC

This is the fork that does not show up in FPS screenshots. Live Center is for the streamer and the people they hired. Meld Multi Chat is for the streamer who is already in the encoder.

  • StreamChum: one feed, platform-scoped mod actions, staff seats, briefs, community search.
  • Meld: read and reply in one dock. Automate with Mix It Up or Streamer.bot if you want a bot brain.
  • Together: Studio or Meld for the picture, Live Center in a browser on the same PC or on a mod's laptop.

Money

StreamChum: 14-day full desk, no card. Then Plus or Pro. USD list is $9.99/month or $99/year for Plus, $16.99/month or $169/year for Pro. Both include the desk and go-live. Creative AI is a credit wallet on paid plans. Meld Studio is $0 to encode. Meld Free includes limited Spark requests plus the gallery. Meld Pro is $20/month, Meld Max is $60/month, with a yearly toggle on their site. Check meldstudio.co/pricing before you pay; those numbers move.

If you only compare "can a mod timeout Kick from one login," we win. If you only compare "is the encoder free," Meld wins. Meld Pro at $20 sits near our Pro desk, but it is paying for Spark usage, not seats and chat history. Buy the meter you will actually burn.

You can use both

Live Center does not care which encoder made the pixels. Open the desk first. Keep whatever already looks good on the canvas.

  • Go live from Studio. Run Live Center. That is the StreamChum night.
  • Go live from Meld. Run Live Center in the browser. Keep Spark widgets if you like them.
  • Stay in OBS, add the StreamChum plugin for destinations, add Live Center for mods. Spark Plug if you want Meld's overlay builder in that collection.

Coming from OBS

Most people landing on this page are trying to leave OBS. StreamChum's pitch is: put chat and mods in Live Center, and go live from Studio when you want that click in the same login. Meld's pitch is a new desktop with docks that used to be plugins. They also say you can bring OBS scenes over.

  • Want the desk tonight: Live Center, even if OBS still encodes.
  • Want go-live in the same product as the desk: StreamChum Studio.
  • Want a free encoder with docks instead of plugins: Meld. Add Live Center if chat is still a mess.

Is Meld Studio free?

The encoder is. Multistream is built in, including Meld Multi in the cloud. No watermark, no time cap. Spark on the free plan is limited requests plus their gallery. If you will keep describing custom widgets, that is Meld Pro or Max. StreamChum is a 14-day desk trial, then a subscription for the desk. Pick the product whose job you will click.

How to actually choose

  • Twitch, YouTube, and Kick in one feed, and someone else has to timeout: StreamChum.
  • Overlays that match a collection, scenes from a sentence, go-live in the same login: StreamChum Studio plus the desk.
  • Viewers in the game from a browser, virtual pads, a waiting room: StreamChum Play.
  • Chat is already a mess and the picture is fine: keep the encoder you have, add Live Center.
  • You mainly wanted a free encoder with docks instead of plugins: Meld.
  • Meld already won the GPU fight: keep it, add Live Center.

Overlays work as browser sources in Studio and in OBS. The 14-day desk trial includes the desk. Creative AI credits for describing a new widget start at 0 until Plus or Pro. Free packs do not wait on that wallet. Meld prices and Multi/Spark details are from their public site as of this writing; check meldstudio.co before you pay or download.

Get Studio from Downloads. The desk is Live Center. Plans are on Pricing. Meld is on meldstudio.co.

Go live everywhere. Run the desk from one place.

Connect Twitch, YouTube, and Kick, go live from StreamChum Studio, then run the rest of the show from one desk.
